PROJECT Papua NEW GUINEA

Papua New Guinea, where 60% of the population lives without a safe water supply, has the poorest access to safe water in the world.

We partnered with Water Hands Hope, an organization that focuses on providing portable filtration systems to earthquake-stricken communities in need of emergency disaster relief. Over 200,000 people were displaced as a result of the earthquake; in addition, the government and police struggled to maintain law and order due to the tribal warfare that broke out. The PH8 Foundation traveled to Mt. Hagen, 4 hours from the epicenter of the earthquake, and distributed portable water filters to various communities including a local orphanage known as BFO.

Water Projects

BFO orphanage has approximately 150 students who rely completely on the headmaster and his wife.

Moge-Anam Village has approximately 150 residents who earn a living from the resources derived from the jungle, and they travel 3km to fetch unsafe water from ponds, rivers, and other bodies of water.

Tennah Village, located 10km from Mt. Hagen, has approximately 250 residents with a school located on the premise.

Water Facts

In Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, the average cost for 50 liters of water from a delivery service is £1.84 ($2.52), which accounts for half of a typical daily salary. This compares with £0.07 ($0.096) for 50 liters of piped water in the UK.

Moreover, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea in Hela Province on 26 February 2018, at 3:44 a.m. local time. The quake triggered many landslides that wiped out entire communities in a single blow. The communities that did survive; suffered from trauma, loss of life, and tribal warfare over lack of resources.
